What is GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates back to 1987 and is best known for simple animations. It supports a limited palette of up to 256 colors and, unlike most formats, can store multiple frames — the basis of its looping animations.

That 256-color limit makes GIF ideal for simple graphics, icons and short animations (memes, reactions), but poor for photographs, which need millions of colors. GIF also supports only one-bit transparency (on or off, with no soft edges).

For animations, modern alternatives like WebP or MP4 produce far smaller files with better quality. Keep GIF for maximum compatibility; convert to WebP for smaller, smoother animations.

How to open a GIF file?

GIF opens in every browser, messenger, and image viewer, including animated playback. Convert to WebP or MP4 for smaller, smoother video-like animations.
